The OSG 1732808 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 5/16-18 UNC right-hand internal threads in ferrous materials. It features a 45-degree helix angle that pulls chips up and out of the hole, reducing clogging in blind-hole applications. The tap is manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel for added wear resistance and is finished with a TICN (titanium carbonitride) coating that further extends tool life in demanding materials. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians use this tap in CNC tapping cycles and hand-tapping setups alike. It carries a 3B class of fit and an H3 thread limit for standard tolerance threaded holes.
This tap is suited for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. The modified bottoming style makes it particularly effective in blind-hole operations where full thread depth near the bottom is required. The TICN coating and vanadium HSS construction make it a practical choice for production environments where tool wear from harder steels is a concern. It is used in both manual and CNC tapping applications across machining, fabrication, and maintenance trades.
Designed for cutting 5/16-18 UNC threads in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Part of the OSG EXOTAP VA3 series.
This tap is intended for use by machinists and qualified trade professionals operating drill presses, CNC machining centers, or hand-tapping equipment. Always ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the tap is properly aligned before beginning the tapping cycle. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if thread form shows signs of degradation.
