The OSG 1732401 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 10-24 UNC internal threads in ferrous materials. It features a 45-degree right-hand helix that pulls chips up and out of the hole during tapping, reducing the risk of chip packing in blind-hole applications. The tap is manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating to reduce friction and extend tool life. With a modified bottoming chamfer, it threads closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard plug tap. The overall length is 2.375 inches, and the thread limit is H3. This tool is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians working on steel components.
The OSG 1732401 is suited for tapping blind holes in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Its 3-flute spiral design and 45-degree helix angle make it particularly effective in materials that produce stringy chips. Typical applications include production machining, tool-and-die work, and maintenance repair operations where close-to-bottom thread engagement is required. The 2B/3B class of fit covers the vast majority of general-purpose and close-tolerance UNC threaded fastener applications.
Designed for cutting 10-24 UNC threads in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. Suitable for use with standard tap wrenches, tapping arms, or CNC machining centers equipped with a 0.194-inch round shank holder.
This tap should be installed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with thread-cutting operations. Always ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the tap is properly aligned to the pre-drilled hole before beginning the tapping cycle. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to maximize tool life and thread quality. Never reverse a broken tap with force; consult manufacturer guidelines for tap extraction procedures.
