The OSG 1732301 is a spiral flute tap designed to cut 8-32 UNC internal threads in ferrous and stainless steel workpieces. The 45-degree right-hand helix flute geometry evacuates chips up and out of the hole during the tapping operation, making it well-suited for blind-hole applications where chip packing is a concern. Ground from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap delivers improved lubricity and corrosion resistance during cutting. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. It carries a 2B class of fit and an H3 thread limit, producing threads appropriate for standard fastener assembly tolerances. Overall length is 2.125 inches.
This tap is intended for use in machine tapping operations on stainless steel, high-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and low-carbon steel. The Series 303 designation places it within OSG's catalog line of general-purpose spiral flute taps. It is commonly used in CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and dedicated tapping machines where rigid or floating tap holders feed the tool at a controlled rate. Machinists, toolmakers, and production operators working in job shops or manufacturing facilities are the primary users of this tool.
Designed for machine tapping of 8-32 UNC threads in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and low-carbon steel. Compatible with standard tap holders and tapping attachments sized for the 0.168-inch shank diameter. Coolant-through application is not supported by this tool.
This tap is installed and driven by a licensed machinist or toolmaker using a rigid or floating tap holder in a CNC machine, turret lathe, or dedicated tapping unit. Always ensure the spindle speed and feed rate match the manufacturer recommendations for the workpiece material before starting the cycle. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping, and confirm the drilled hole is the correct tap drill diameter for 8-32 UNC. Do not attempt to hand-tap with this tool in applications that require the controlled feed of a machine setup.
