The OSG 1732101 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 5-40 UNC internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, it delivers heat resistance and lubricity suited to tapping stainless steel, high-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and low-carbon steel. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes than a standard plug or taper tap. With a 45-degree helix angle and 3 right-hand flutes, the spiral geometry evacuates chips up and out of the hole, reducing the risk of chip packing in confined tap depths. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary installers of this tap.
This tap fits production and maintenance applications where fine, small-diameter threads are required in harder materials. The 5-40 UNC designation is common in precision instrument work, electronics chassis, and small mechanical assemblies. The H2 thread limit provides a controlled tolerance for use with 2B and 3B class of fit threaded fasteners, making it appropriate for both general-purpose and close-tolerance work. Series 303 identifies this as part of OSG standard catalog tooling.
Designed for cutting 5-40 UNC threads in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and low-carbon steel workpieces. Fits standard tap holders and tapping chucks accepting a 0.141-inch shank diameter.
This tap is installed and used by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians operating drill presses, CNC machining centers, or hand-tapping equipment. Ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pilot hole before engagement to avoid tap breakage in small-diameter work. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material. Never reverse a spiral flute tap under load without relieving chip pressure, as breakage risk is elevated at this diameter.
