The OSG 1731701 is a spiral point plug tap designed for cutting 5/8-18 UNF right-hand internal threads in ferrous metals. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations where chip packing is a concern. Built from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) and finished with a steam oxide coating to reduce friction and improve lubrication retention, the 1731701 holds a 3B class of fit and an H3 thread limit for consistent dimensional accuracy across production and maintenance work. Machining professionals, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance mechanics use this tap where a reliable, true-to-tolerance UNF thread is required.
The 1731701 is suited for through-hole tapping in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel. The plug chamfer distributes cutting load across several lead threads, reducing stress on entry and making it a practical choice for both production runs and field maintenance applications. The oxide finish helps in lower-speed hand-tapping scenarios as well as machine tapping where cutting fluid is applied. This tap is not designed for interrupted thread or coolant-through use.
Designed for cutting 5/8-18 UNF right-hand internal threads in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel. Compatible with standard tap holders and machines accepting the 0.48-inch shank diameter.
Machinists and maintenance mechanics should secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pilot hole to avoid thread skew or tap breakage. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless or hardened steel. Power down all equipment before clearing chips or changing tooling. Follow shop safety procedures and applicable OSHA standards when operating tapping equipment.
