The OSG 1731208 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 7/16-14 UNC holes in metalworking applications. Built from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, it delivers increased surface hardness and wear resistance compared to uncoated HSS taps. The plug chamfer on this right-hand tap provides gradual thread engagement, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations. With 3 flutes and a spiral point geometry, it pushes chips forward ahead of the cut rather than backing them out, reducing chip packing in production setups. Overall length is 3.157 inches with a thread length of 0.893 inches and an H3 thread limit for consistent tolerancing.
This tap is used in machining, fabrication, and maintenance environments where reliable 7/16-14 UNC threads are required in a range of ferrous materials. It is appropriate for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, and tapping heads. Typical applications include through-hole threading in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel workpieces. The TiCN coating extends tool life when running higher speeds or in abrasive material conditions. It is commonly used by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working in industrial and manufacturing settings.
Designed for threading 7/16-14 UNC through-holes in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel. Suitable for use with standard tapping chucks, CNC rigid tapping setups, and hand tapping equipment that accepts a 0.323-inch shank diameter.
Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the drilled hole before beginning the threading operation. Use a cutting fluid or tapping lubricant appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel. Always power down or de-energize the machine and confirm the spindle has stopped before changing or inspecting the tap. Do not force the tap if resistance increases unexpectedly — back off to clear chips before continuing.
