The OSG 1730101 is a spiral point plug tap designed to cut internal threads in a 5-40 UNC profile. Built from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide coating, it handles threading operations in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting action, making it well suited for through-hole applications. With a 2B/3B class of fit and H2 thread limit, it produces threads within standard tolerance ranges used in precision fastener and machine assembly work. This tap is a hand-tool or machine-threading component installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals.
This tap is used in production and maintenance threading of through-holes in a range of ferrous materials. Common applications include threading machine screw holes in sheet metal, brackets, housings, and structural components where a 5-40 UNC thread is required. The oxide coating provides a measure of lubricity and corrosion resistance that extends tool life in moderate-duty cutting operations. It is suited for manual tapping handles as well as low-speed CNC and drill press applications with appropriate tapping attachments.
Designed for threading hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring a 5-40 UNC internal thread. Suitable for use with standard tapping handles and machine tapping setups configured for right-hand thread cutting.
A licensed machinist or qualified technician should secure the workpiece firmly and use appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped. Align the tap perpendicular to the workpiece surface before beginning the cut to avoid cross-threading. Reverse the tap periodically to break chips when threading manually. Do not exceed the tap's rated material hardness range, and inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use.
