Product Description

The OSG 1726108 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 9/16-18 UNF right-hand internal threads in ferrous workpiece materials. It is manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel and carries a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, which improves surface hardness and wear resistance compared to uncoated tooling. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes than a standard plug chamfer. With a 45-degree helix angle and four flutes, this tap is suited for chip evacuation in materials that produce stringy chips, including stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The overall length is 3-19/32 inches and the tool weighs 0.15 pounds.

This tap is used in machine shop, maintenance, and production environments where precise UNF thread forming in steel alloys is required. The spiral flute geometry makes it well suited for CNC machining centers and tapping heads where chip packing in blind holes is a concern. It is appropriate for use in applications requiring a finished thread closer to the bottom of the hole, such as hydraulic fittings, fastener repair, and precision mechanical assemblies. The H3 thread limit provides a standard tolerance class for general-purpose UNF threading. Typical end users include machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working with steel components.

Key Features

  • Vanadium high-speed steel construction provides improved toughness and heat resistance over standard M2 HSS
  • TiCN coating increases surface hardness and reduces friction for extended tool life in ferrous materials
  • 45-degree right-hand spiral flutes evacuate chips upward out of blind holes, reducing packing and tap breakage
  • Modified bottoming chamfer enables threading to within a few threads of the hole bottom
  • H3 thread limit suits standard-tolerance UNF fastener and fitting applications
  • Coolant-through design is not required, making this tap compatible with standard tapping fluid or flood coolant setups

Compatibility

Rated for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpiece materials. Part of the OSG EXOTAP VA3 series, Series 303.

Installation Notes

This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist familiar with tapping feeds, speeds, and tool holding for high-speed steel taps. Power down and lock out any machine spindle before inserting or removing the tap from the holder. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for steel alloys to reduce friction and heat buildup. Do not exceed the recommended cutting speed for the workpiece material, as overheating will reduce coating effectiveness and shorten tool life.
