The OSG 1726001 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting internal 9/16-12 UNC right-hand threads in a range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS) with a steam oxide coating, it delivers improved lubricity and corrosion resistance during tapping operations. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes than a standard taper or plug tap. With a 45-degree helix angle and 4 flutes, the spiral design evacuates chips upward out of the hole, making it well suited for blind-hole work in tougher materials. Overall length is 3.594 inches. This tap is used by machinists and maintenance professionals in production and job-shop environments.
Designed for blind-hole and through-hole tapping in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The modified bottoming chamfer reduces the unusable thread length at the bottom of a blind hole, which is critical in close-tolerance fixturing and structural applications. The 45-degree right-hand spiral flute configuration actively lifts chips out of the cut zone, reducing the risk of chip packing in deep or interrupted holes. This tap is a solid choice for CNC tapping cycles as well as hand-tapping applications where chip control is a priority.
Rated for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Intended for 9/16-12 UNC threaded hole applications requiring an H3 thread limit tolerance class.
Installation requires a properly sized tap drill for 9/16-12 UNC to achieve the correct percentage of thread engagement before tapping. Use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated torque driver or CNC rigid-tapping cycle to avoid tap breakage. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, and replace at the first sign of dulling to prevent thread damage in the part.
