The OSG 1725601 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 3-48 UNC holes in a plug chamfer configuration. Built from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles right-hand threading in a range of steel materials including low-carbon, medium-carbon, stainless, and hardened steel. The 2-flute spiral point design pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting action, making it well suited for through-hole applications. The H2 thread limit holds a 2B class of fit, delivering consistent thread tolerance across production runs. Overall length is 1.811 inches with a 0.496-inch thread length.
This tap is used in machine shop, maintenance, and production environments where 3-48 UNC threads are required in through-hole applications. Typical installs include precision component fabrication and repair work on small-diameter fastener bosses in carbon steel and stainless steel workpieces. The steam oxide finish provides lubricity and mild corrosion resistance during cutting operations. It is sized for use in CNC tapping centers, drill presses, and manual tapping fixtures.
Designed for threading 3-48 UNC through-holes in low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel workpieces.
Installation should be performed by a machinist or qualified technician familiar with tapping operations. Secure the workpiece and align the tap perpendicular to the drilled hole before beginning the threading cycle. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if cutting edges are degraded.
