The OSG 1725001 is a spiral point plug tap designed for cutting internal threads in a wide range of ferrous metals. Built from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide coating, it produces 9/16-12 UNC right-hand threads in through-hole applications. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, keeping flutes clear and reducing the risk of chip packing. With 3 flutes and an H3 thread limit, this tap holds tight tolerances suited to general-purpose production threading. Overall length is 3.594 inches, and thread length is 1.43 inches (1-21/32 inches). It weighs 0.165 pounds.
This tap is intended for use in materials including low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The plug chamfer style makes it best suited to through-hole threading where chip evacuation is not restricted. Typical install scenarios include machine tapping on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads in production shop and maintenance environments. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users. It is not configured for coolant-through delivery and does not produce an interrupted thread profile.
Designed as a standard-shank spiral point plug tap for 9/16-12 UNC through-hole threading in low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces.
This tap is installed by machinists using standard tap holders, floating tap heads, or rigid tapping chucks rated for the shank diameter of 0.429 inches. Power down or de-energize any machine tool and confirm it is fully stopped before changing tooling. Apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material, particularly when threading stainless steel. Do not force a tap that has stalled - back it out carefully to clear chips before continuing.
