The OSG 1724501 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 10-24 UNC internal threads in a range of steel workpieces. The 45-degree right-hand spiral flute geometry pulls chips up and out of the hole during tapping, reducing clogging in blind-hole applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a blind bore. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, the tap offers improved lubricity and wear resistance compared to uncoated HSS. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a shank diameter of 0.194 inches. Installed by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance professionals on manual machines, CNC tapping heads, or hand tappers.

This tap is suited for production and maintenance tapping in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it the correct choice when thread depth close to the bottom of a blind hole is required. The H2 thread limit provides a tight tolerance class appropriate for standard UNC fit requirements. It is sold individually and is part of OSG Series 303.

Installation Notes

Secure the workpiece and use a properly sized tap holder or chuck before beginning. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped, particularly when working with stainless steel. Back the tap out periodically to clear chips even with the spiral flute design. Do not force a tap that has stopped advancing, as breakage may occur and requires extraction tooling to remedy.
