The OSG 1724301 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC internal threads in a wide range of steel alloys. Manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, it delivers solid wear resistance and lubricity in demanding threading applications. The 45-degree right-hand helix flute geometry evacuates chips upward out of the hole, making it well-suited for blind-hole tapping. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard plug tap. With a 3B class of fit and H2 thread limit, this tap produces threads within tight tolerance ranges expected in precision assemblies. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is intended for threading operations in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The spiral flute design works particularly well in CNC machining centers, knee mills, and drill press setups where consistent chip removal from blind holes is critical. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it a practical choice for fixtures and components where thread engagement must extend nearly to the base of a drilled hole. The 2.125-inch overall length accommodates standard tap holders and extension adapters without interference.

Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping operations. Always secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is aligned axially with the drilled hole before engaging. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped, particularly when working with stainless steel. Back the tap out periodically to break and clear chips, and never force a tap against resistance to avoid breakage.
