The OSG 1724201 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 6-32 UNC internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap resists wear and reduces friction during the threading operation. The modified bottoming chamfer allows thread cutting close to the bottom of blind holes. With a 45-degree helix angle and right-hand spiral flute geometry, chips are efficiently evacuated up and out of the hole, making it well suited for tapping in materials that produce stringy or packed chips. This is a 3B class of fit tap, delivering standard tolerance threads for general mechanical assembly.
The 1724201 is used in metalworking and machining applications where 6-32 UNC threads are required in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it the right choice when full thread depth is needed close to the floor of a blind hole. With an overall length of 2 inches, it is sized for benchtop drill press work, CNC tapping cycles, and hand-tapping with a standard tap wrench. The H2 thread limit provides consistent tolerance control across production runs.
Rated for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Produces 6-32 UNC right-hand internal threads to a 3B class of fit. Part of OSG Series 303.
Installation is performed by machinists and toolroom technicians using a tap wrench, tapping fixture, or CNC machine with a rigid or floating tap holder. Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the tap is started perpendicular to the work surface to avoid thread misalignment. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material before and during the tapping operation. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, as a damaged tap can seize in the hole and ruin the part.
