The OSG 1723201 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 7/16-14 UNC right-hand internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap offers solid wear resistance and chip evacuation suited to production and maintenance threading work. The 45-degree helix angle drives chips up and out of the hole, making it a practical choice for blind-hole applications where chip packing is a concern. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard plug or taper tap. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance mechanics are the typical users.
This tap is intended for threading stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The modified bottoming chamfer and spiral flute geometry make it well-suited for blind-hole work in precision machining environments and general metal fabrication. With an overall length of 3.156 inches and a thread length of 0.571 inches, it fits standard tap holders and machine spindles sized for this shank diameter.
Rated for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use tap for 7/16-14 UNC applications in standard tap holders and CNC or manual machines accepting this shank size.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard tapping procedures. Power down or disable the spindle before loading or removing the tap. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when threading stainless steel, to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Do not exceed the recommended feed rate for the helix angle and material combination, and never reverse a tap under power without confirming the machine is programmed for reverse-feed extraction.
