The OSG 1722308 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. It features a modified bottoming chamfer, allowing threads to be cut close to the bottom of blind holes. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, this tap delivers increased wear resistance and lubricity compared to uncoated HSS tooling. The 45-degree right-hand spiral flute design actively pulls chips up and out of the hole during cutting, reducing chip packing in confined bores. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a 0.168-inch shank diameter. Thread limit is H5, indicating a close-tolerance fit appropriate for precision threaded assemblies.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance applications where 8-32 UNC threads are required in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it particularly useful in blind-hole applications where full thread depth close to the hole floor is required. It is used by machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool and die professionals working on fixtures, enclosures, fastener repairs, and precision components.
Designed for cutting 8-32 UNC right-hand threads in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Coolant-through capability is not available on this tap.
This tap is installed in a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid tapping spindle appropriate for the shank diameter. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the pilot hole diameter matches the recommended tap drill size for 8-32 UNC. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping between uses, as a worn tap in stainless steel can work-harden the bore and cause breakage.
