The OSG 1722301 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. The 45-degree right-hand helix moves chips up and out of the hole during tapping, reducing the risk of chip packing in blind or shallow holes. Made from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, it delivers good wear resistance and lubricity across moderate production runs. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard plug tap. Overall length is 2.125 inches. This tap is sized for use in a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC machining center with appropriate feed control.
The OSG 1722301 is suited for threading operations in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. The 8-32 UNC thread form is common in instrument panels, electrical enclosures, small mechanical assemblies, and fastener applications across light manufacturing and maintenance trades. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it a practical choice where thread engagement must begin close to a blind hole floor. It is sold individually and is part of OSG Series 303.
Rated for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Intended for 8-32 UNC thread applications where a spiral flute geometry is required for chip control.
This tap is typically installed by machinists, toolmakers, or maintenance mechanics using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC spindle with synchronized feed. Secure the workpiece before tapping and apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel. Do not exceed the recommended feed rate for the thread size, and back the tap out periodically to clear chips when working in deeper blind holes. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use.
