The OSG 1722208 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 6-32 UNC right-hand internal threads in ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and tool life compared to standard HSS taps. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes. Three right-hand spiral flutes pull chips up and out of the hole during the cutting operation, which is critical when tapping interrupted or deep blind bores. This tap is intended for use by machinists and maintenance professionals working on precision thread applications in production or repair environments.
This tap is suited for threading stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. The 45-degree helix angle and spiral flute geometry make it well-suited for blind-hole applications in these materials where chip evacuation is a concern. With a 2-inch overall length and 0.248-inch thread length, it fits standard tapping chucks, CNC machines, and manual tap handles used in machine shop and field maintenance work. The H5 thread limit designation indicates a tight tolerance suitable for close-fit thread class requirements.
Rated for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Part of the OSG EXOTAP VA3 series. Fits standard tap holders and chucks accepting a 0.141-inch shank diameter.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists or maintenance technicians using a CNC machining center, drill press, or manual tap handle with an appropriate tap wrench. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 6-32 UNC before tapping. Apply a suitable cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel, to reduce heat and galling. Never force the tap if resistance increases unexpectedly, as this can result in tap breakage and workpiece damage.
