The OSG 1716401 is a spiral flute STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap designed for cutting internal threads in applications that require a helicoil or thread insert. Built from powdered metal with a steam oxide finish, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, stainless steel, and titanium. The 10-32 UNF thread profile, 3-flute spiral design, and 15-degree helix angle work together to evacuate chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole tapping operations. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard taper or plug chamfer. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a 0.194-inch shank diameter and a thread length of 0.875 inches.
This tap is suited for precision machining environments where thread inserts are required to restore or reinforce threads in worn or damaged bores, or where higher thread strength is needed in softer base materials. Its H3 thread limit and UNF 10-32 designation make it a standard choice in aerospace, automotive, and general metalworking shops. Right-hand flute direction matches conventional right-hand tapping cycles on CNC machining centers, lathes, and manual drill presses. The powdered metal construction provides elevated wear resistance compared to standard high-speed steel, making it appropriate for production runs across the listed difficult-to-machine material families.
Designed for use in STI thread insert applications requiring a 10-32 UNF thread form. Suitable for use in alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, stainless steel, and titanium workpieces per OSG Series 315 specifications.
This tap is installed by qualified machinists using a tapping head, CNC rigid tapping cycle, or manual tap wrench with appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material. Ensure the correct STI tap drill size is used prior to tapping to achieve the proper minor diameter for the thread insert. Do not use this tap as a standard thread tap, as the STI profile is oversized relative to the nominal thread size. Follow machine shop safety practices and use cutting lubricant appropriate for the workpiece material family.
