The OSG 1716001 is a spiral flute STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap designed for cutting 6-32 UNC threads in demanding materials. Built from powdered metal with a steam oxide finish, this tap handles alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloys, stainless steel, and titanium. The 3-flute spiral design with a 15-degree helix angle evacuates chips upward out of the hole, reducing clogging and breakage risk in blind or through applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2 inches with a shank diameter of 0.141 inches.
This tap is used in precision machining and repair applications where HeliCoil or similar threaded inserts are required to restore or upgrade thread strength. It is suited for production and maintenance shops working with aerospace-grade alloys, stainless components, and hardened steels. The Series 315 designation places it in OSG's line of STI taps optimized for spiral flute performance in tough-to-machine materials. Thread length is 11/16 inches (0.311 inches decimal), and thread limit is H3. Right-hand flute direction matches standard right-hand thread applications.
Designed for use in STI tapping applications requiring 6-32 UNC threads. Rated for use in alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, stainless steel, and titanium as stated by the manufacturer.
This tap is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC machine with rigid or floating tap holder. Always use cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel or titanium. Ensure the pilot hole diameter matches the STI tap drill specification before tapping. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use to prevent thread damage or tap breakage in hardened materials.
