The OSG 1714101 is a spiral flute STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap designed for threading operations that require the formation of oversized threads to accept helical wire inserts. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide finish, this tap delivers solid wear resistance and lubricity in demanding tapping applications. It features a 45-degree helix angle that promotes chip evacuation up and away from the cutting zone, and a modified bottoming chamfer for threading closer to the bottom of blind holes. The overall length is 2-3/8 inches with a 7/8-inch thread length, making it suited for shallow-to-moderate depth STI thread profiles in a variety of base materials.
This tap is intended for use in machine shop, manufacturing, and maintenance environments where standard threads are being converted to accept threaded inserts for added thread strength or repair. It cuts 10-32 UNF threads at an H2 thread limit, right-hand flute direction, and is rated for use in carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The spiral flute geometry makes it well suited for through-hole and short blind-hole tapping on CNC machines, drill presses, or tapping heads where consistent chip flow is required.

STI taps should be installed by machinists or tooling professionals familiar with thread insert systems and proper tap alignment. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is running at the appropriate speed for the material being tapped. Power down or deactivate the machine fully before changing or inspecting the tap. Follow the tap manufacturer and machine builder recommendations for cutting fluid selection, especially when tapping stainless steel or hardened materials.
