The OSG 1709101 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading 6-32 UNC holes in difficult-to-machine materials. Built from powdered metal and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles stainless steel, hardened steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys where standard HSS taps struggle. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. With a 10-degree helix angle and three right-hand spiral flutes, the tool efficiently evacuates chips upward during cutting, reducing the risk of chip packing in confined bores. Overall length is 4.331 inches with a 0.685-inch thread length.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance machining environments where precision threaded 6-32 holes are required in tough alloys. Typical applications include aerospace components, medical hardware, and high-strength fastener installations where thread quality and tool life in hard materials are critical. It carries a 2B class of fit designation with an H3 thread limit, producing threads within standard tolerance for general mechanical assembly. The Series 313NI designation identifies it as part of OSG's line optimized for nickel-alloy and stainless applications.
Designed for cutting 6-32 UNC right-hand threads in stainless steel, hardened steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys. Series 313NI, suitable for use in CNC tapping centers and manual tapping applications requiring 2B-class thread tolerances.
This tap is installed by a machinist or tool-and-die professional using a standard tap holder, tapping head, or CNC rigid tapping cycle. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the drilled hole before engagement. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound rated for the specific workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel or nickel alloys, to extend tool life and prevent galling. Never force a tap that has stopped advancing — back off to clear chips before continuing.
