The OSG 1708801 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 1/2-13 UNC holes in demanding materials. It features a plug chamfer, 3 flutes, and is manufactured from powdered metal with a steam oxide coating for improved lubricity and wear resistance. The H5 thread limit and 2B class of fit make it suited for standard tolerance through-hole tapping applications. With an overall length of 3.374 inches and a thread length of 0.921 inches (1-21/32 inches), this tap is built for production environments where consistent thread quality in tough alloys is required. Right-hand thread direction is standard.
This tap is intended for use on hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium — materials that demand a robust cutting tool with good heat and wear characteristics. The spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the tap and out of the hole, making it well suited for through-hole tapping in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads. This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist familiar with threading operations and cutting tool safety. Power down and lock out the machine before mounting the tap in the holder. Use an appropriate cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material — particularly important when tapping stainless steel or high-nickel alloys to prevent work hardening. Verify spindle speed and feed rate against the tool manufacturer's recommendations and workpiece material before starting the threading cycle.
