The OSG 1704908 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading 1/2-13 UNC holes in demanding metal applications. It features a modified bottoming chamfer, a 2B class of fit, and a TICN (titanium carbonitride) coating over a powdered metal substrate. The 15-degree right-hand helix flutes evacuate chips up and out of the hole, making this tap well suited for blind-hole tapping in tough materials. Overall length is 3.594 inches with a shank diameter of 0.429 inches. The H5 thread limit holds tight tolerances required for precision threaded assemblies. Licensed machinists, toolroom technicians, and production floor operators are the primary users.
This tap is rated for use in alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys. It performs in both manual tapping operations and CNC machining centers where controlled spiral-flute action is preferred over straight-flute designs. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard taper or plug chamfer, which is critical in close-tolerance fixture and component work. No coolant-through capability is present, so external cutting fluid or flood coolant at the spindle is the standard approach for heat management in hard materials.
Rated for alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys. Part of the OSG EXOTAP Series 313, designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct substitute for spiral flute taps in the 1/2-13 UNC modified bottoming category.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician using a properly sized tap holder or CNC rigid-tapping setup. Power down and secure the workpiece before tool changes. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, as this tap does not include coolant-through capability. Follow shop-standard speeds and feeds for spiral flute taps in powdered metal tooling; do not exceed recommended surface footage for the material being tapped.
