The OSG 1703301 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 10-32 UNF internal threads in blind holes and tight-clearance applications. It features a modified bottoming chamfer, 3 right-hand spiral flutes with a 15-degree helix angle, and a steam oxide coating over a powdered metal substrate. The spiral flute design evacuates chips upward out of the hole, making it well suited for through- and blind-hole tapping where chip packing is a concern. Overall length is 2.375 inches, and the shank diameter is 0.194 inches. This tap is built for production and job-shop environments where thread quality and tool life in tough materials are priorities.
The OSG 1703301 is rated for use in alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys — material groups that demand a tap with good wear resistance and chip evacuation geometry. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard taper or plug tap. It is appropriate for aerospace, automotive, and general metalworking applications where 10-32 UNF threads are specified in tough or gummy materials. Installation is performed by machinists and tooling technicians using CNC machining centers, drill presses, or tapping arms with appropriate tapping fluid or coolant.
Designed as an OEM-style threading tool for 10-32 UNF applications in metalworking operations involving alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloy workpieces.
Tapping operations should be performed by qualified machinists following shop-specific feeds, speeds, and lubrication protocols for the workpiece material. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the spindle is properly aligned before engaging the tap to avoid breakage. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil — dry tapping in stainless or high-nickel alloys is not recommended. Inspect tap condition regularly, as worn taps in hard materials can seize or break without warning.
