The OSG 1703001 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading 10-24 UNC internal threads in a wide range of challenging materials. It features a modified bottoming chamfer that allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes, making it well suited for tight-tolerance production work. Built from powdered metal and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap offers improved lubricity and wear resistance compared to standard high-speed steel tools. With 3 right-hand spiral flutes at a 15-degree helix angle, it efficiently evacuates chips upward out of the hole during the tapping cycle. Overall length is 2.375 inches. This tap is sold individually.
This tap is used in shop and field applications where 10-24 UNC threads are required in difficult-to-machine materials. Its material application range includes alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys, making it a practical choice for aerospace, automotive, and general precision machining environments. The modified bottoming chamfer is particularly useful in production setups where through-hole tapping is not possible and full thread engagement near the bottom of a blind hole is required. It is sized for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping arms.
Designed for cutting 10-24 UNC internal threads in alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloy workpieces. Fits standard tap holders sized for a 0.194-inch shank diameter with a 0.152-inch square drive.
Installation should be performed by a machinist or qualified trade professional using a properly aligned tap holder, CNC spindle, or tapping arm to avoid tap breakage. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for 10-24 UNC threads before beginning. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel, titanium, or high-nickel alloys. Do not exceed the tap's rated capacity by forcing feed rate or running the tap dry in hard materials.
