The OSG 1702908 is a spiral point plug tap designed for cutting internal metric coarse threads in demanding materials. Built from powdered metal and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap delivers increased hardness and lubricity compared to standard high-speed steel. It produces M12x1.75 threads to a 6H class of fit with a right-hand thread direction. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for through-hole applications where chip evacuation is critical. With 3 flutes and a D6 thread limit, it provides controlled cutting action in tight-tolerance threading operations.
This tap is engineered for threading through-holes in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. It is used in production machining, tool and die work, and maintenance environments where difficult materials require a more durable tap than standard HSS. The TiCN coating reduces heat buildup and extends tool life in abrasive and work-hardening materials. It is appropriate for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines operating with appropriate cutting fluid.
Designed for through-hole tapping operations in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. Part of the OSG Series 344 tap line.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician using appropriate tapping equipment. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the pilot hole before engaging the cutting edges. Use a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound recommended for the workpiece material, particularly when threading stainless steel, titanium, or high-nickel alloys. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping between uses, as premature failure in hardened materials can result in tap breakage and workpiece damage.
