The OSG 1701501 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 7/16-20 UNF right-hand threads in a wide range of demanding materials. Built from powdered metal with a steam oxide coating, this tap is suited for production and maintenance threading operations where tool longevity and consistent thread quality matter. The 3-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it effective in through-hole applications. With an H5 thread limit and plug chamfer, it starts easily and produces accurate threads within tight tolerance ranges. Licensed tradespeople and machinists working with hard-to-machine materials rely on this geometry for reliable, repeatable results.
This tap is suited for threading through holes in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. The steam oxide finish reduces friction and provides a modest level of corrosion resistance during storage and use. At 3.157 inches overall length with a 0.323-inch shank diameter, it fits standard tap holders and CNC tooling setups. Typical applications include repair threading, fixturing, and production work in job shops, maintenance environments, and manufacturing cells where 7/16-20 UNF fastener threads are required.

Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC machining center with rigid or floating tap holder. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if cutting edges are degraded.
