The OSG 1700908 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 5/16-24 UNF right-hand threads in demanding materials. Built from powdered metal and finished with a TiCN coating, this plug-chamfer tap handles hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. The spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the cutting edge, keeping the flutes clear in through-hole applications. With a thread limit of H6 and an overall length of 2.72 inches, this tap is suited for precision threading work in metalworking and machining operations.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading applications where chip evacuation is a priority. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in that distributes cutting load across multiple threads, making it appropriate for production tapping and repair work in materials with higher hardness or tensile strength. This tap is installed and operated by machinists using a tapping machine, CNC machining center, or hand tap wrench. Power down and secure the workpiece before beginning any tapping operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or external coolant compatible with the workpiece material to manage heat and extend tap life. Follow standard speeds and feeds for powdered metal taps in the target material to avoid tap breakage.
