The OSG 1662501017 is a solid carbide helical flute thread mill designed for cutting 7/16-20 UNF threads in both internal and external applications. With 4 right-hand flutes and a cutting diameter of 0.303 inches, it produces accurate thread forms in a single helical interpolation pass. The 0.313-inch shank diameter and 1-inch length of cut make this tool well-suited for CNC machining centers running tight-tolerance threaded features. It carries an EgiAs coating for improved wear resistance and tool life in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. This is a single-piece solid carbide tool from OSG Series 16625, built for production and job-shop environments alike.
This thread mill is used in CNC milling applications where a single tool must handle both thread size and pitch without a dedicated tap. The 7/16-20 UNF thread specification is common in automotive, aerospace, and precision mechanical assemblies requiring fine-pitch fastener engagement. Right-hand thread direction and right-hand flute direction are standard for conventional CNC thread milling cycles. Coolant-through is not supported, so external flood or mist coolant should be used during operation.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation for thread milling of 7/16-20 UNF threaded features in internal and external configurations.
Thread mills of this type are installed by machinists in CNC tool holders with appropriate collets or shrink-fit systems sized for the 0.313-inch shank. Verify runout at the spindle before engaging the workpiece, as excessive runout will degrade thread quality. Program helical interpolation cycles per the machine tool or CAM software guidelines for thread milling — do not use this tool in a tapping cycle. Ensure workpiece is properly fixtured and all axes are zeroed before initiating the thread milling routine.
