The OSG 1653502908 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading through-holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built from powdered metal and coated with TiCN (titanium carbonitride), it delivers increased surface hardness and lubricity compared to standard HSS taps, making it a solid choice for production environments where tool life matters. The plug chamfer distributes the cutting load across several leading threads, easing entry into pre-drilled holes. It cuts a 3/8-16 thread to a 2B class of fit with an H5 thread limit, providing the tolerance control required for standard fastener applications in machined assemblies.
This tap is suited for use in CNC machining centers, knee mills, and drill presses where through-hole tapping is performed on workpiece materials including alloy steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, die steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, and hardened steel. The right-hand, three-flute spiral point design pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, keeping the flutes clear and reducing the risk of chip packing in through-hole applications. It is part of the OSG EXOTAP VC-10 series 16535.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct application tap for 3/8-16 through-hole tapping operations. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel as specified by OSG for this series.
Installation and use of this tap should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling professional familiar with tapping speeds, feeds, and cutting fluid selection for the workpiece material. Always ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe state before loading or inspecting the tap. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound matched to the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel or hardened steel. Verify that the pre-drilled hole diameter matches the recommended tap drill size for a 3/8-16 thread before beginning the operation.
