The OSG 1653502508 is a spiral point tap in the EXOTAP VC-10 Series 16535, designed for right-hand threading in through-hole applications. It cuts a 5/16-18 thread profile with a plug chamfer and a 2B class of fit, producing clean, consistent threads in production and maintenance environments. The tap is manufactured from powdered metal and coated with TiCN for extended wear resistance and heat dissipation. With a thread length of 0.83 inches (20.4 mm) and an overall length of 5.96 inches (150 mm), this tap handles standard threading depths across a range of workpiece materials. Machinists and maintenance technicians in metalworking and fabrication shops are the primary users.
This tap is suited for threading through-holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The 3-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the cutting edge, making it well-matched for through-hole work where chip evacuation is critical. Rated material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel. It is not configured for coolant-through use and does not produce an interrupted thread.
Designed for right-hand 5/16-18 through-hole tapping in alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel workpieces. Part of OSG Series 16535 EXOTAP VC-10.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists using CNC machining centers, drill presses, or tapping attachments. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is properly aligned before starting the tapping cycle. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to maintain tool life and thread quality. Follow standard machine shop safety practices, including lockout/tagout procedures on manually operated equipment before any tool change.
