The OSG 1653003708 is a spiral point tap designed to cut M8x1.25 metric threads in through-hole applications across a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Part of the OSG EXOTAP VC-10 series, it features a 3-flute spiral point geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting action, reducing chip clogging and enabling cleaner thread formation at higher feed rates. The tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel (HSS) for improved toughness and wear resistance compared to conventional HSS, and carries a V coating for additional surface hardness and lubricity. Thread tolerance is 6H class of fit with a D5 thread limit, making it suitable for standard metric fastener assemblies.
This tap is intended for production and job-shop threading of through holes in materials including low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, die steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, and hardened steel. The plug chamfer allows the tap to start in a pre-drilled hole and begin cutting quickly, which suits CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where a controlled start is needed. Right-hand thread direction is standard for conventional metric fastener assemblies.
Designed for use in through-hole applications requiring M8x1.25 metric threads in alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel workpieces.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling professional. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is held in a rigid, properly aligned tap holder or floating head collet to prevent tap breakage. Power down and lock out the machine before changing or inspecting taps. Use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the specific workpiece material to maximize tool life, even though coolant-through is not required for this tap.
