The OSG 1653001708 is a spiral point tap designed for threading M4x0.70 metric holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from powdered metal and finished with a V coating, this tap delivers extended tool life in demanding production environments. It features a plug chamfer, 3 flutes, and a D4 thread limit with a 6H class of fit, making it well-suited for tight-tolerance threaded fastener applications. The overall length is 6.5 inches and the thread length is 10.1 mm. Right-hand thread direction is standard. This tap is part of OSG Series 16530, also marketed under the EXOTAP VC-10 style designation.
This tap is intended for use in machining and metalworking operations where through-hole threading is required. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, making it especially effective in through-hole applications rather than blind holes. It is appropriate for use on alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel. It is a common choice for CNC tapping centers, turret lathes, and drill presses equipped with tapping attachments in job shop and production environments.
Designed for use in through-hole tapping of M4x0.70 threaded features across alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel workpieces.
Installation and use of this tap should be performed by a qualified machinist familiar with CNC or manual tapping operations. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle speed and feed rate are set per the material being tapped before engaging the tool. Do not reverse the tap without a synchronized tapping head or CNC rigid tapping cycle, as this can cause tap breakage. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tool life.
