The OSG 1652505608 is a 4-40 UNC spiral flute tap designed for threading small-diameter holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built from VC-10 high-speed steel and finished with a V coating, it delivers enhanced wear resistance and reduced friction during the tapping operation. The 2-flute, right-hand spiral design with a 45-degree helix angle evacuates chips up and out of the hole, making it well-suited for blind-hole applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a hole. Thread limit is H2, indicating a normal class of fit for standard tolerance requirements. Licensed machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is intended for threading 4-40 UNC holes in a broad range of materials including alloy steel, low-, medium-, and high-carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, and cast aluminum. Its spiral flute geometry makes it a practical choice for CNC machining centers, manual knee mills, and drill presses where chip control in blind holes is a priority. The 3.543-inch overall length and 0.318-inch shank diameter suit standard tap holders and collet chucks used in production and job-shop environments.
Designed for use in alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel workpiece materials requiring 4-40 UNC internal threads.
Installation and use of this tap should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers familiar with tapping feeds, speeds, and torque limits for small-diameter taps. Always secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is properly aligned before engaging the spindle to prevent tap breakage. Power down the machine and follow lockout procedures before changing or inspecting the tap. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to promote chip evacuation and extend tool life.
