The OSG 1651504008 is a high-performance spiral point tap designed for threading 5/8-11 UNC holes in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. It features a plug chamfer for use in through-hole applications, three flutes, and a TiCN coating over a powdered metal (PMT15 grade) substrate. With an overall length of 4.331 inches and a thread length of 1.09 inches, this tap delivers consistent 2B class-of-fit threads cut in the right-hand direction. The H5 thread limit ensures dimensional accuracy within tight tolerance ranges. It is installed by machinists, toolroom technicians, and production operators working with manual taps, CNC tapping heads, or rigid tapping setups.
This tap is suited for through-hole tapping operations in both manual and CNC machine applications. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it particularly effective in through-hole setups where chip evacuation must be controlled. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel. It is part of OSG Series 16515 and carries the high-performance spiral point style designation.
Designed for through-hole tapping in alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel workpieces requiring a 5/8-11 UNC thread to a 2B class of fit.
Install in a machine spindle or hand-tapping setup configured for right-hand thread cutting. Power down or de-energize the machine before changing tooling and confirm the tap holder provides adequate axial float for rigid or semi-rigid tapping. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound matched to the workpiece material to maximize tool life and thread quality. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, particularly when working with hardened or stainless steel materials.
