The OSG 1651502708 is a high-performance spiral point tap designed to cut 3/8-24 UNF right-hand threads in through-hole applications. Built from powdered metal (PMT15 grade) and finished with a TiCN coating, it delivers extended tool life in demanding materials compared to standard HSS taps. The plug chamfer eases entry into the cut, while the spiral point geometry pushes chips forward and out of the hole, keeping the flutes clear during production tapping. Three flutes and an H3 thread limit provide consistent sizing for 3B class-of-fit tolerances. Overall length is 3.543 inches with a 0.751-inch thread length and a 0.381-inch shank diameter.
This tap is suited for machining and fabrication environments where through-hole tapping is performed in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The TiCN coating reduces friction and resists wear when working in abrasive or harder materials. Typical applications include production tapping on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working in job shops, manufacturing facilities, or MRO settings will find this tap appropriate for medium to high-volume through-hole operations. Compatible material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel. Belongs to OSG Series 16515 high-performance spiral point taps.
Tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard speeds and feeds for the workpiece material and tap size. Ensure the spindle and workpiece are properly secured before beginning the operation. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the material being tapped to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace when thread quality degrades.
