The OSG 1651502008 is a high-performance spiral point tap designed for threading 5/16-18 UNC internal threads in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. Built from powdered metal (grade PMT15) and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap delivers improved wear resistance and tool life compared to standard HSS taps. It features a plug chamfer for general-purpose through-hole tapping and is ground to a 2B class of fit with an H5 thread limit. The 3-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for machine tapping in production environments. Overall length is 3.543 inches with a 0.665-inch thread length and a 0.318-inch shank diameter. Right-hand thread direction only.
This tap is intended for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where consistent thread quality is required across medium to high production volumes. The TiCN coating and PMT15 powdered metal substrate support tapping in demanding materials including alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, cast iron, high-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, die steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, and more. The plug chamfer style makes it the standard choice when through-hole threading is the primary application. Coolant-through capability is not available on this model.
Suitable for tapping 5/16-18 UNC through-holes in alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel workpieces. Part of OSG Series 16515.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists and toolroom professionals using CNC tapping cycles, rigid tapping attachments, or dedicated tapping machines. Secure the workpiece fully before beginning the tapping operation and verify spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace at the first sign of thread-quality degradation. Follow applicable shop safety procedures for rotating tooling and cutting fluid handling.
