The OSG 1651501408 is a spiral point plug tap designed for right-hand threading operations in a wide range of metalworking applications. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel (PMT15 grade) and coated with TiCN for enhanced wear resistance and lubricity, this tap cuts 12-24 UNC threads to a 2B class of fit with an H3 thread limit. It features 3 flutes and a plug chamfer, making it well suited for through-hole tapping. The overall length is 3.15 inches (80 mm) with a thread length of 0.496 inches (12.70 mm) and a shank diameter of 0.220 inches. Machinists and toolroom technicians install this tap in CNC machining centers, knee mills, and drill presses where consistent thread quality and tool life are critical.
This tap is part of OSG Series 16515, positioned as a high-performance spiral point tool for production and job-shop environments. It is not coolant-through and does not produce an interrupted thread. The 2B class of fit meets standard commercial threading tolerances for general fastener assembly. Non-oversize construction keeps thread geometry within H3 limits. Typical applications include tapping through holes in machined components where chip evacuation ahead of the tap is required.
Designed for tapping 12-24 UNC through holes in alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the spindle is properly aligned with the hole axis before beginning the tapping cycle. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if cutting edges show degradation.
