The OSG 1651500308 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 5-40 UNC internal threads in a wide range of metalworking applications. Built from powdered metal (grade PMT15) and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap offers extended tool life in demanding cutting conditions. It features three flutes, a plug chamfer for gradual thread engagement, and a right-hand thread direction with an H2 thread limit for 2B class-of-fit tolerances. Overall length is 2.25 inches with a thread length of 0.299 inches and a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and precision fabricators are the primary users of this tool.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations in both manual and CNC tapping setups. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, making it effective in through-hole applications where chip evacuation is critical. Material compatibility covers a broad range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals including alloy steel, low-, medium-, and high-carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, die steel, aluminum, and cast aluminum. It is appropriate for use in production environments where consistent 2B class-of-fit results are required across high-volume runs.
Designed for cutting 5-40 UNC internal threads in alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and die steel. Part of OSG Series 16515 high-performance spiral point taps.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists or CNC machine operators in a lathe, drill press, tapping machine, or machining center with appropriate tap holder. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle speed is set per the material being tapped before starting. Use a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate to the workpiece material to reduce heat and tool wear. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use and replace at the first sign of degradation to prevent thread damage or tap breakage.
