The OSG 1651001708 is a high-performance spiral point tap designed for threading M12x1.75 metric coarse holes in production and job-shop environments. Built from powdered metal (PMT15 grade) and finished with a TiCN coating, it delivers superior wear resistance and heat tolerance compared to standard HSS taps. The plug chamfer style eases entry into through-holes, while the 3-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the cutting zone, keeping the flutes clear during the cut. Overall length is 110 mm and thread length is 21 mm. Intended for use by machinists and tooling professionals on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines.
The 1651001708 is suited for through-hole tapping in a wide range of metalworking applications. The D6 thread limit and 6H class of fit make it appropriate for standard metric fastener fits in precision and general manufacturing work. Material applications listed by OSG include alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, and die steel. Right-hand thread direction. This tap does not feature coolant-through capability and does not produce an interrupted thread, making it straightforward to apply in conventional setups.
Designed for M12x1.75 metric coarse through-hole tapping across alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, and die steel workpieces per OSG Series 16510 specifications.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with proper tapping speeds, feeds, and cutting fluid selection for the workpiece material. Secure the tap in a properly sized tap holder or chuck rated for the shank diameter before use. Ensure the workpiece is rigidly fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for M12x1.75 before tapping. Do not reverse-run a spiral point tap to break chips - the geometry pushes chips forward and is intended for continuous through-hole cutting only.
