The OSG 1650509108 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 5-40 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It features a bottoming chamfer, making it suited for threading to the bottom of blind holes where full thread engagement near the floor is required. The tap is manufactured from powdered metal and carries a V coating for improved wear resistance and reduced friction during the tapping operation. With a 45-degree helix angle and 2 right-hand flutes, it efficiently evacuates chips upward out of the hole. Overall length is 2.25 inches with a thread length of 0.2 inches and a tapping depth of 18 millimeters.
This tap is used in machine shop, maintenance, and production environments where 5-40 UNC threads are required. The bottoming configuration is particularly relevant when threading into blind holes in alloy steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, hardened steel, cast iron, aluminum, cast aluminum, and stainless steel workpieces. It is installed using a standard tap holder or tapping head and is suited for both manual and CNC tapping operations. The H2 thread limit provides a controlled tolerance for 2B class of fit applications.

Installation is performed by machinists or tool and die technicians using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC tapping cycle with a synchronized spindle. Always ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pre-drilled hole to avoid tap breakage, especially with small-diameter taps in this size range. Power down or disengage the machine spindle before loading or removing the tap. Cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material should be applied to reduce heat and extend tap life.
