The OSG 1650501008 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading 8-36 UNF internal threads in a wide range of metallic workpieces. Built from powdered metal (grade PMT15) and coated with titanium carbonitride (TiCN), it delivers extended tool life in demanding tapping operations. The 45-degree right-hand helix flute geometry evacuates chips upward, making it well suited for blind-hole applications. With a modified bottoming chamfer, the tap threads close to the bottom of a hole while maintaining controlled thread form. This tool targets machinists, toolroom technicians, and production floor operators working in ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
This tap is intended for use in machining environments where fine-thread 8-36 UNF tapping is required. Its TiCN coating and powdered metal substrate handle alloy steel, low-, medium-, and high-carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, cast aluminum, and hardened steel. With a tapping depth of 21.00 mm and a thread length of 6.40 mm (0.251 inches), it is suited for short blind-hole threading in precision components. It is used in production, maintenance, and repair operations requiring consistent 2B class of fit results.
Designed for tapping 8-36 UNF right-hand internal threads in workpiece materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and non-ferrous alloys, and hardened materials (ISO material codes P, M, K, N, H). Part of OSG Series 16505.
Install in a tap holder or tapping head rated for the appropriate torque range for No. 8 fine-thread taps. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pre-drilled pilot hole matches the recommended tap drill diameter for 8-36 UNF before beginning the tapping cycle. Cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material should be applied to reduce heat and improve thread finish. Do not reverse the tap under power until the flutes have cleared the hole to avoid breakage.
