The OSG 1645002562 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 2-56 UNC internal threads in a range of ferrous metals. Ground from vanadium high-speed steel and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), this tap delivers improved wear resistance and heat dissipation compared to uncoated HSS tooling. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes than a standard plug tap. With 2 right-hand spiral flutes at a 45-degree helix angle, the design pulls chips up and out of the hole during the tapping cycle, reducing the risk of chip packing in confined cuts. Overall length is 1.772 inches with a shank diameter of 0.141 inches.
This tap is suited for use in machine tapping operations on alloy steel, cast iron, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel workpieces. The H2 thread limit and 2B class of fit make it appropriate for standard commercial thread tolerances in production and maintenance machining environments. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance mechanics will find this tap useful for small-diameter blind-hole work where chip evacuation is critical.
Designed for cutting 2-56 UNC threads in alloy steel, cast iron, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel. Coolant-through is not supported on this tap.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician familiar with tapping speeds, feeds, and cutting fluid requirements for the workpiece material. Secure the tap in a properly sized chuck or tapping head before beginning the operation, and ensure the workpiece is rigidly fixtured. For blind holes, set depth stops carefully to prevent bottoming the tap under power. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped to maximize tool life.
