The OSG 1636000808 is a thread forming STI tap designed for metric coarse thread applications at M10 x 1.5. Unlike cutting taps, this forming tap displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. It is made from high-speed steel and carries a V finish. The tap has an overall length of 3.937 inches, a thread length of 1.6563 inches, and a shank diameter of 0.367 inches. The square drive size measures 0.275 inches. It is intended for use in machine tapping operations across metalworking and fabrication environments where thread quality and hole integrity are critical.
This tap is suited for through-hole and semi-bottoming applications in a wide range of materials including carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminum, nickel, hardened steel, and titanium alloy. The semi-bottoming chamfer allows the tap to start threads closer to the bottom of a blind hole without full bottom-tap geometry. It is commonly used by machinists, toolroom technicians, and production operators in aerospace, automotive, and general metalworking settings. Thread class of fit is 6H, matching standard metric tolerance requirements for most threaded fastener assemblies.
Designed for use in machine tapping setups requiring M10 x 1.5 metric coarse threads with a 6H class of fit. Compatible with carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminum, nickel, hardened steel, and titanium alloy workpieces.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size — do not use a standard cut tap drill chart, as the hole diameter must be larger to allow material displacement. This tap is intended for use in a tapping machine, CNC machining center, or rigid tapping setup; hand tapping with a forming tap is not recommended. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and use an appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and maintain thread quality. Verify spindle speed and feed rate are set per the tool manufacturer recommendations for the specific material being tapped.
