The OSG 1636000508 is a thread forming STI tap designed for cutting M5 x 0.8 metric coarse internal threads in a semi-bottoming configuration. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel and carries a V finish. It measures 3.1496 inches overall length with a 1.0 inch thread length and a 0.255 inch shank diameter. The 0.191 inch square drive end fits standard tap wrenches and holders. It is sized for use in precision machining, maintenance, and repair threading operations where an STI (screw thread insert) insert is the final fastener interface.
This tap is suited for threading operations in both production and repair environments. The M5 x 0.8 thread size and semi-bottoming chamfer make it appropriate for through-holes and moderately deep blind holes. It performs across a range of workpiece materials including carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminum, nickel alloys, hardened steel, and titanium alloy. The D4 thread limit and 6H class of fit ensure dimensional accuracy compatible with standard metric fasteners and helicoil-style thread inserts used by machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool and die professionals.
Designed for use in tapping operations requiring M5 x 0.8 metric coarse STI threads across carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminum, nickel alloys, hardened steel, and titanium alloy workpieces. Part of the OSG Series 16360.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench or CNC tapping holder sized for the 0.255 inch shank diameter. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct diameter for M5 x 0.8 thread forming before tapping. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tool life. Do not force the tap or reverse sharply, as thread forming taps are more sensitive to misalignment than cutting taps.
