The OSG 1635016202 is a thread forming tap designed for M16x2.00 metric coarse threading in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Unlike cutting taps, this tool displaces and cold-forms material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips. Built from cobalt high speed steel and coated with TiCN for heat and wear resistance, it is suited for demanding production and job-shop environments. The 6H class of fit and D12 thread limit ensure dimensional accuracy across the full thread form. The modified bottoming chamfer — 2.5 to 3 threads — allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 4.33 inches (110 mm) with a 0.79-inch (20 mm) thread length.
This tap is engineered for both blind-hole and through-hole threading applications. Its material compatibility spans aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium, making it a versatile choice for machine shops, aerospace, and toolroom work. Thread forming taps require proper lubrication matched to the workpiece material — a high-pressure forming compound is recommended for steels and stainless alloys. Ensure the pilot hole diameter is sized correctly for the form-tap process, as forming taps require a slightly larger hole than cutting taps for the same thread size. Use a torque-controlled tapping spindle or a calibrated tapping attachment to avoid overloading the tool, especially in hardened or high-nickel materials. Always secure the workpiece and confirm spindle alignment before tapping to prevent tap breakage.
