The OSG 1635012756 is a thread forming tap engineered for cold-forming internal metric threads in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut chips, producing stronger, work-hardened threads with no swarf to clear. This tap is built from cobalt high-speed steel for elevated heat and wear resistance and is finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating to reduce friction and extend tool life. It covers an M12x1.75 Metric Coarse thread profile to a 4H class of fit with a D6 thread limit, and features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 4.3307 inches (110 mm).
This tap is suited for production and maintenance threading operations in CNC machining centers and manual tapping applications where thread quality and tool longevity are priorities. The cobalt substrate and TiCN coating make it well-matched for demanding material groups including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. It handles both blind hole and through-hole threading applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind bore than a standard plug or taper chamfer. No coolant-through capability is present, so adequate external lubrication or tapping fluid is required.
Designed for M12x1.75 Metric Coarse thread forming applications in blind and through-hole configurations across the material groups listed in the specifications. Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF Series 16350 product line.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill diameter, which differs from standard cut tap drill charts — consult an M12x1.75 thread forming drill size reference before drilling the pilot hole. Power down and secure the workpiece before tapping. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil generously, as this tap does not have coolant-through capability. Torque output should be monitored, especially in harder materials, as forming taps generate higher torque than cutting taps of the same size.
