The OSG 1635012156 is a thread forming tap designed for M12x1.50 metric fine threading in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Unlike cutting taps, this tool displaces material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. It carries a 4H class of fit with a D6 thread limit and features a modified bottoming chamfer of 2.5 to 3 threads, making it well suited for blind hole applications where thread engagement close to the bottom is required. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating to extend tool life under demanding conditions. Overall length is 3.937 inches (100 mm) with a thread length of 0.669 inches (17 mm).
This tap is used in production and maintenance machining environments where thread forming is preferred over thread cutting. It handles blind hole and through-hole threading operations across a broad material range including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. It is part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF Series 16350, a line developed for high-performance forming applications in both job shop and production floor settings. Installation is performed by licensed machinists and toolroom professionals using standard tapping equipment.
Rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. Material application codes P, M, N, and H per ISO designation. Designed for M12x1.50 metric fine thread forming in both blind and through-hole configurations.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming hole diameter — consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts for the correct pilot hole size before tapping, as this differs from cutting tap requirements. Power down and secure the workpiece before tool changes. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil matched to the workpiece material to prevent galling, particularly in stainless steel and high-nickel alloys. Follow applicable shop safety and machine guarding practices during all tapping operations.
