The OSG 1635007018 is a thread forming tap in the EXOPRO XPF Series 16350, designed for cold-form threading in ductile metals without cutting chips. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tap delivers extended tool life under high heat and abrasion conditions. It is configured as a modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 thread chamfer length, suitable for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 80 mm (3.15 inches) and thread length is 12 mm (0.47 inches). Used by machinists and toolroom technicians in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping fixtures.
This tap is rated for use in a wide range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. It supports both blind hole threading and through-hole threading applications. The 6H class of fit and D8 thread limit make it appropriate for standard metric tolerance threading in precision and production environments. It is well suited for aerospace, automotive, and general metalworking applications where thread quality and tool durability are both critical.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers and manual tapping equipment accepting standard straight-shank taps with a shank diameter of 0.318 inches (8.08 mm). Compatible with materials designated under application codes P (carbon and alloy steel), M (stainless steel), N (non-ferrous including aluminum), and H (hardened steel).
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication or tapping fluid matched to the workpiece material — always use a cutting fluid rated for the specific alloy being tapped. Ensure the tapping hole diameter is correctly sized for thread forming (forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps for the same thread size; consult OSG Series 16350 pilot hole charts). Secure the workpiece and ensure proper axial alignment before tapping to avoid tap breakage. This tap is intended for use by trained machinists or tool-and-die professionals familiar with metric threading standards.
